| Ballinswood Sales is the consignment branch of Ballinswood Farm. Bill Murphy is the front man in the operation. He has a keen eye for a horse, years of practical experience and innate salesmanship. From developing your sales prospect at the farm to following the polished horse to the ring, Bill is involved 100%. In 2003, Ballinswood Sales sold the highest priced Yankee Victor weanling, highest priced Parade Ground yearling and 3rd most expensive Tactical Cat yearling. However, we do not rest on our laurels. We strive to improve our sales operations with each sale to achieve maximum value for our clients - our only barometer of success! |
| Prior to starting Ballinswood Sales, Bill brought his first consignment - a broodmare and foal - to the Fasig-Tipton sales arena in 1996 under the agency name Rockwell Sales . The following year, he invited his sister, Claire, to be his partner. Under his guidance, Rockwell Sales developed into a prominent sales company having sold the highest priced yearling at Fasig-Tipton (KY) in October, 2000 and leading the successful pinhook of two-time Grade I stakes winner and Kentucky Derby favorite, Harlan's Holiday (Harlan - Christmas at Aiken, 1999) at the Fasig-Tipton July, 2000 sale. As with many successful businesses, an offer was made that Bill could not refuse and he sold his interest in Rockwell in the Spring of 2002. He immediately started Ballinswood Sales in conjunction with the new farm, Ballinswood Farm. The agency name may have changed, but Bill's philosophy of optimizing value for consignors' sales prospects continues. |
We at Ballinswood Sales takes many steps to achieve optimum value for our sales clients. Planning begins months in advance with the client’s goals as the starting point by assisting them with their breeding choices. Then, as the offspring grows or the racing filly retires as a broodmare prospect, selecting the best sale for showcasing the individual horse is essential. Once the entry is made, Ballinswood Sales works diligently to provide the most exposure for the client’s investment. |
| Many successful Thoroughbred trainers believe victory lies in running a horse where he belongs - in other words, where he can win. We at Ballinswood Sales believe the same to be true when it comes time to sell your Thoroughbred at public auction. Ballinswood Sales strives to maximize the exposure of its sales prospects by choosing the auction that will allow the horse to stand out. |
| Knowledge of the Marketplace |
Bill’s experience in the auction ring and his astute knowledge of the marketplace is an essential asset. From advocating the sales entry to the sales companies to bringing the buyers to your sales horse to guiding clients to correctly pricing their investment’s reserve price, Bill and the Ballinswood Sales team work diligently to achieve maximum value. |
Generating interest in your horse is achieved by pre-sale advertising, selling the horse’s assets at the sale, and knowing the buyers. Advertising can be costly, so choosing the right (i.e., cost-effective) campaign is crucial. Knowing the horse’s pedigree and confirmation is one thing, knowing how to sell those points as assets and to whom is another. Over the years, Bill has developed professional relationships with the top buyers. He has sold horses to Buzz Chase, John Ferguson, Kenny McPeek, D. Wayne Lukas, Brereton Jones, The McKathans, Barry Berklehammer and many others. These buyers return to Bill’s barn every sale as they respect Bill’s judgment and the quality of his consignments. He respects their time and values their business. The work does not stop at the sale ring. Although we strive to achieve maximum value in the sales arena, Bill has been very successful in finding buyers for those horses who do not bring their reserve (RNA’s). |
In addition to selling Thoroughbreds, Bill and his Ballinswood Sales Team is available to research and assess sales prospects for client purchases both privately and at public auction for the industry standard 5% commission (preferred client discount available). Ballinswood Sales bases its success on the client’s achievement of his or her goals as a Thoroughbred investor.
